The 600-Yard Wade: On the island of Betio, Tarawa Atoll, Creed waded 600 yards under unrelenting fire from Japanese machine guns and mortars after his Higgins boat grounded on the reef. Only five men from his ten-man squad reached the sea wall alive.

Saipan Victory: This Japanese Type 90 helmet was recovered during the fierce fighting on Saipan, where the 2nd Marine Division faced desperate banzai charges and fortified cave defenses.

Legacy: To Creed, the war was a story of the "bonds forged in the lives of young men... pulled together as brothers in the felt clutch of desperate circumstance."
