Italian Campaign

Picture

July 1943 - May 1945

Sicily, Salerno, Monte Cassino, Anzio, and the Gothic Line are areas where concentrated fighting occurred during the Italian Campaign.  The Campaign involved most of the Allied countries including: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa,  France, Poland, Brazil, Greece, India and others.  It is estimated that overall Allied casualties totaled about 320,000--no campaign in Western Europe cost more than the Italian campaign.  The road to Rome was slow and costly, but was vital to the success in Western Europe.

34th Infantry Division M1 Helmet

The 34th ID was one of many United States infantry divisions to see combat in Italy.  The 34th, a division of the Army National Guard, saw action at Salerno, Monte Cassino, Rapido River, Anzio, and Bologna.  The division is credited with 517 days of  front line combat, more than any other U.S. division.  This helmet belonged to 1st Lt. Joseph A. Slezak.  The helmet shell and liner possess the 34th Infantry Division insignia, the Red Bull.  More information on 1st Lt. Slezak can be found in our Heroes section.
